Hi! I'm Naseem (they/them). I'm a queer nonbinary trans Persian writer from Chicago, raised by Iranian immigrants. I did my undergraduate at the University of Chicago and my master's at DePaul University. Until January 2017, I balanced my writing with my work as a neuroscientist, where I studied rodent models of both concussions and psychiatric disabilities. I left my PhD program at the University of Pennsylvania after the 2016 US presidential election to pursue my lifelong love of writing full time.
I currently live in Reno, Nevada (territory belonging to the Numu, Wašiw, Newe, and Nuwu peoples), where I recently finished the MFA program in fiction at the University of Nevada, Reno, as well as a graduate certificate in Gender, Race, and Identity. I write speculative fiction, primarily (secondary world) fantasy, across all ages (adult and kidlit (MG/YA) both). My debut fantasy novella, The Bruising of Qilwa, will be published by Tachyon Publications in 2022. I also write both creative and journalistic nonfiction; for the latter, I focus mainly on science and science literary, academia, the intersection between technology and sex work, and public health. I'm represented by Erica Bauman at Aevitas Creative Management.
Last but not least, I'm the managing editor at two amazing places:
Sidequest is an independent gaming criticism website. If you're a writer of a marginalized gender who wants to talk to me about games (video, tabletop, mobile, etc.), please reach out at firstname.lastname@example.org. We're an entirely volunteer run site, so neither we nor our writers get paid. (We're working on that!) For now, we offer a great community and lots of editing/pitching help.
Sword & Kettle Press is a small press of feminist speculative fiction and poetry. In late 2020, we ran a successful Kickstarter to back our Cup & Dagger Mini Chapbook series, which was fully-funded within a few hours of launch. We host the magazine Corvid Queen for feminist fairytales in addition to our books.
My favorite games are JRPGs, I love cooking and baking, and I am always hankering for my next tattoo.
